TROSA is a comprehensive two year residential substance abuse recovery program in Durham, North Carolina accepting substance abusers with one condition: they must have a strong desire to change their lives. TROSA’s program elements include vocational training, education, counseling, mentoring, leadership training, and aftercare. Our treatment model is the Therapeutic Community, a drug-free residential setting that uses a hierarchical model with treatment stages reflecting increased levels of personal and social responsibility. The community relies on its members – both treatment staff and those in the program – as change agents. For more information on therapeutic communities, see the National Institute on Drug Abuse website. There is no cost to the individual receiving treatment at TROSA. Our funding comes from three primary sources: revenue generating businesses which provide vocational training for residents, donations from individuals, companies, and foundations, and modest government support. TROSA is a nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) status and is governed by a Board of Directors. The TROSA formula works. Over 1200 people have graduated from our program and gone on to live healthy, productive lives as members of their communities and families.

Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) follows the SAMHSA generated Matrix Model for IOP patients. The Matrix is recognized by the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). The Matrix Model is an intensive outpatient treatment approach that was developed through 20 years of experience in real-world treatment settings. The intervention consists of relapse-prevention groups, education groups, social-support groups, individual counseling and family counseling delivered over 32 sessions. A 90 minute family education session is also incorporated that utilizes the Matrix Model for Family Education. We strive to work closely with all referral sources, including DSS, Courts, Primary Care Physicians, individual therapists and other agencies. We recommend and encourage all patients to become involved in community 12 step support groups as a way to establish and maintain long term recovery, including the use of a sponsor and working the steps of the program. WTC-IOP in Wilmington meets Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Day and evening programs are available. After completion of the IOP program, patients enter the continuing care phase of treatment which meets once per week for 90 minutes on Wednesday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. Continuing care is a process group for members to share their recovery concerns and progress with peers also in early recovery. Additional services provided at WTC-IOP include a Suboxone clinic two times a week that is augmented by and incorporated into the IOP group sessions. We also have an “Impaired Professionals Group” that allows the NC Board of Nursing to refer nurses to treatment for substance abuse.
