Am trying to find a treatment center for our 34 year old son who is dealing with alcohol and drug addiction as well as suffering with mental problems, (pszichophrenia, bipolar).  Needing a dual-diagnosis Center, he is hoping I can find one who will allow him to bring his dog. Needless to say, finding it very difficult.  There must be something out there. Please help if you know of anything.

Hi alumguy, welcome to sobersystems. I'm Baby Bear. That request is a tough one. I have never heard of such a thing, But here's the site for the National Treatment Facility Locator

http://findtreatment.samhsa.gov

Maybe you can find something there. Please continue to post. 50 % of addicts are dual diagnosed, including myself (mine's depression), and I have a cousin who is schizophrenic, and I'm sure it must be difficult at times. We are here to support you in any way we can. Good luck with your search.

Big Hugs, BABY BEAR

It's always OK in the end, if it's not, then it's not the end.

Welcome to Sobersystems, alumguy. I, like Baby Bear, have never heard of a pet-friendly treatment center. I understand and can empathize with exactly what you are going through as I had the same situation with my son and his dog. While we are serious dog people (our animals were always very important to us - members of the family, really), and when it was apparent that my son required treatment, there were no places that we could find that would accommodate the dog. There was no other option but to relocate her for a while. My son's addiction was rough enough and this created an additional and painful obstacle. The dog went to a friend for a couple of months but she could not keep her any longer (he was gone for quite a while) and the dog was adopted. The truth was my son could BARELY take care of himself let alone that precious dog. She was in terrible shape because of HIS addiction, and we felt some comfort in knowing that she was adopted into a loving, healthy home. Good luck with it all. Please keep us posted. We are here for each other. Keep coming back.

Blessings, Eileen C.

I found one this morning in Florida that takes a pet with a 25 lb. limit, but I had a blonde moment and forgot to post it on site.  I emailed it to alumguy and it you read this, would you pleast post it for others.  I will keep looking too.  paw

Like I said in the earlier post, I'll keep looking, though and see if I can come up with anymore.    arc stands  for Adavanced Recovery Center

www.arc-hope.com  is the site for the pet friendly recovery housing I found.  They take a pet up to a 25lb limit.
