I myself for one am new to recovery, and I find getting to sleep to be very difficult as I withdraw from alcohol.  I have noticed though, day by day, I have more energy.  I am experiencing some difficult issues right now, but I am trying to focus on the positive.  (I am hoping abstinence will help take off the 20 lbs alcohol has put on!)  Can any of you share the healthy physical benefits you have experienced from quitting alcohol?

Hi Praxilla, I like this topic,I my self had bad allergic reactions from  drinking, i used to break out in hand cuff's after drinking myself into a black out, amnesia. I also would break out in spots,,, drug spots,   coke spots , dope spots , etc.. Just a little honest humor.

Hello Praxilla.

In all things, you benefit from the effort you put into it.  People stay busy by exerising:  going on walks, running, skiing, swimming, rollerblading, going to the gym, playing baseball, soccer, basketball, football.  It not only makes you healthier, you gain a new hobby.  I use to go to the gym everyday to get my anger out.

Keep coming back!

Pretty funny.......tx for the humour soberseeker!  Yes, that's true that you reap what you sow......I was wondering if some people out there had health problems clear up, physical problems resolve themselves, etc because of quitting alcohol.  Some people feel their skin became healthier after they "detoxed" alot of toxins out, or lost weight after quitting drinking, maybe even more serious health problems like reversing problems with the liver, etc?  Just curious.

I'm glad you found it funny, i try to laugh as much as i can these days, i didn't get sober to be a stick in the mud. But to better answer you query, i myself have gained weight of which i was seriously under, my memory cleared up, especially short term, but mainly my mental, emotional & spiritual well being is much healthier , i am not depressed anymore and always feeling sorry for myself. physically i wasn't in too bad of shape to begin with, i was lucky there, but mentally i was a train wreck.

Today i wake up with a smile on my face and a deep desire to live each moment to it's  fullest, I eat right and love myself in a healthy way.

my greatest gift is a conscience contact with GOD, of which i am not ashamed to call Christ.

Prayer and meditation has helped me tremendously, it  has promoted overall health from the inside out.

I  actually get a natural high today just by sitting quietly  with myself and shutting down my mind, it's the best high ever , i love being sober

Since I quit drinking 3 years ago I have had a lot less migraines which would take me down for 2 or 3 days in a row.

I have also found a new interest in exercising both my body and my brain. I have lose 20 pounds and now enjoy shopping for clothes. I look at myself now in the mirror and say "you look fabulous!"

I also have a lot more time to read books, which was something I couldn't do much of back when I was drinking all the time, so you could say that my world is a lot bigger which helps me to feel more connected with others.

Over all I feel great!
