Hey ya'll. So I have a dilemma... Got sober in AA, working their steps, and that was great. Since, my sponsor has relapsed, and I am lost. I live in a small town, like 3 NA meetings a week. I am an addict, not an alcoholic. I worked the AA steps b/c where I got sober, it's like it is now and there were no options. Anyways, I have more clean time than anyone in the NA program here, and I want to find a sponsor to work through the NA steps with... Now, there are a couple people that have a year or two working the NA program, would it be backwards for me to ask one of them to sponsor me to work the NA program? Or is it possible for me to find an NA sponsor online? Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks!

Hey lorisue! welcome!

our literature tells us that a sponsor"should have a working knowledge of all the steps.(some include traditions.I am an active member of NA also of Naranon.I personally believe "in person' face to face meetings and sponsors are the most helpful but it depends on the person.REMEMBER clean time doesnt equal recovery so abstinence from drugs and working recovery are really 2 different animals.I would approach the people you have met and ask them about their step work and make a decision after that.Bottom line "just dont use" and also watch any potential sponsors to see
how they live the process" and not just show up for meetings etc.It sounds as if you have a backround in step work so you hopefully are practising the principles. You probably have the 'big book" I WOULD SUGGEST GETTING A COPY OF THE 'basic text" also.LET US KNOW HOW YOU ARE DOING AND REMEMBER "EASY DOES IT" THERE IS NO GRADUATION FROM THIS PROCESS SO JUST FOR TODAY BE THE BEST YOU CAN  and continue "doing the work" Congratulations on your sobriety ,continue in the miracle..nice meeting you peace mikefCool

What Mike pointed out is true.  There is a difference in those of us who are just sober, and those of us who work and live recovery.  Personally, if I were in your shoes, I would search for someone that has at least a few years of sobriety, and that lives the steps (If this is your path).  I would even go as far as to look at other meetings, such as AA, Al Anon, etc. etc.  I do know, however, of people who are in some groups and use online sponsorship as an addition to their current sponsor (Someone that was once an active member on site used to sponsor people through e-mail, as long as they had a local sponsor).  I also know some who are sponsored by individuals in another town.  So there are different ways to approach the situation.  Like Mike, years of sobriety does not mean as much if you truly find the RIGHT individual.  Let us know how it works out for you - ok?
