I entered recovery seeking something,I wasn't sure what,I just knew how I had been living was not working.I entered a formal treatment program. There I was introduced to a local AA group in Oklahoma City,Oklahoma.I am originally from California. The geographic worked for me.I was able to remove myself from a lifetime of contacts and associates that had become a great barrier to my recovery. It wasn't my interest or desire that was in question, but my ability to stay in recovery was difficult.Always meeting up with a former associate or aquaintance around town, shortly I would be right back in the middle of another disaster with remorse and frustration. My continued relapses were very depressing and created a feeling of hopelessness.I completed a formal recovery program.During my stay there we made trips to a local 12 step group that became my home group. There,I learned about private sober living houses in the city.I had no prior knowledge of sober living except in the formal facility sense,Too expensive for my participation.I found these private homes were self supporting through the members weekly contributions. It provided a stable, supportive, recovery enviroment. These houses provide everything except the clothes on your back, even those are available through donations to the groups by individuals throughout the community.I klived as a resident in a private sober house and put together a year and a half of sobriety.I moved into my own apartment for a time.I was then approached about taking over management and operation of The Shartel House in Oklahoma City,OK.I accepted and have spent about 9 months now working with those in recovery through a sober living enviroment.I have maintained personal sobriety,it is my belief sober living has a lot to do with my continued recovery. It's a great way for those new in recovery, to learn how to live sober with the support and assistance of those in thier home.I have found it a invaluable component in my recovery. It's so fulfilling to me personally,I have no desire to live anywhere else at this point in time.I have first hand knowledge of many men and women whom have recovered due to these private sober living homes in the Northwest Community of Oklahoma City.AA is very strong here and the programs of NA,CA,and other are active sister programs. Many members attend both types of groups scince they have experienced both in thier using history.Where ever your recovery is geographically,I hope you too benefit from these sober living residences. Some are now recovering who's chances would not have been so good early on living in the community. The goal of sober living is to prepare an individual for re-integration to independant living. Some of us increase our chances of success and put sober time together in these private homes that require very reasonable weekly contributions. There are employment services available, and they are all directly linked to Anonymous 12 step programs. If you would like further information e-mail me at lightning2u@live.com: If you want a blessing,be a blessing.good day, happy sobriety.
