Women's Treatment
In the world of alcohol and drug addiction, it has been learned that gender specific treatment programs are better at helping addicts through the recovery process than a co-ed situation. Women need to recover where they can connect with other women, not in isolation. Men tend to want to be left alone while women reach out for support and connection. Recovery for women addicted to alcohol or drugs appears to happen much smoother when among other women. There is the common bond of battling addiction while caring for families and it is a powerful bond offering solid support for women in recovery.
A reputable, quality women’s addiction treatment program will provide a safe place and address issues specific to women addicts, such as low self-esteem, the lack of job skills and the lack of a strong support network. There are several therapeutic intervention methods that a treatment center specializing in the care and recovery of women will use to address the recovery process.
- Cognitive-based therapy- this is a therapy situation in which unreasonable and irrational thinking processes will be addressed. The idea is to rework the recovering addict’s thinking process and enable her to make better decisions, such as not drinking or drugging.
- Psychodrama- this group therapy process is one that works well for women. The patients explore highly emotional subjects in a play form with the professional therapist as the director of the play. Spontaneous and dramatic, this allows women to react to situations and issues raised and the therapist to help them understand their reactions and what to do about them.
- Family and children’s services- especially important for women in recovery is the care and keeping of their children. Mothers are the center of a child’s world and vice versa. Therapy is done with the family and individually, including play therapy with the children. The family is given education about what addiction is and how to deal with the presence of addition in their lives and parenting education is given as well. Children can be kept nearby in that older children can attend local schools on a special basis and younger children can go to daycare, either on site or close by. Quality bonding time is ensured for mothers and their children. The family can grow closer and stronger with the help of the professionals at the women’s treatment center.
By gearing the treatment of the alcohol or drug addiction specifically to women, the success rate is much better for female addicts. Self-esteem and depression issues unique to women are addressed as well. This type of situation addresses so many things that are unique to women’s situations as opposed to that of male addicts. It is important for women to connect and form a support network for one another. They need to know their children are happy and well-cared for through the duration of the treatment process, or they will not be able to focus on getting themselves well. Gender specific treatment is perhaps a big factor for women in recovery.
