There are many residential treatment centers designed specifically to meet the needs of women. Some of the addictions common to women include alcoholism, other drug dependencies, codependency, and eating disorders. Women account for about 1/4 of all drug abusers--totaling about 2.7 million. Studies indicate that women generally become dependent on drugs for reasons quite different from their male counterparts.

Since drug addiction for men and women tends to differ considerably, the treatment must also be different. Professionals working in womens treatment centers must be familiar with and well-trained in the psychological makeup of women, including issues relating to self-esteem, physical and sexual abuse, and others. Women are often reluctant to discuss the real issues in their lives, and it is important to have professionals who understand their needs.

Womens treatment centers generally follow a program similar to Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous, along with the on-site counseling and other help. Some centers focus on natural methods of overcoming the addiction while others are more traditional. Regardless of the treatment type you prefer, it is important to discuss with the facility the percentage of success.

As more women are coming to the understanding that they are at a higher risk for damage to the brain or for breast cancer because of even moderate alcohol use, they are seeking a treatment center that will help them with their addiction. Studies show that it takes less alcohol for women than for men to cause significant damage. Finding the right womens treatment center now could mean adding years of healthy living to your life.
