A sober house is the perfect environment for a recovering alcoholic to begin life outside the restrictions of structured living. While there are guidelines to adhere to, most sober houses are designed to allow the sober alcoholic the opportunity to see his or her family, maintain a job, and create a new life. The accountability and support that is available in a sober house is intended to give the recovering alcoholic a sense of stability while learning to live in the real world.

Many of the residents of sober houses are actively participating in a twelve-step program for recovering alcoholics. The effectiveness of the treatment is dependent on the willingness of the individual to comply with the requirements of the program. Each sober house has its own admission criteria, but generally, this type of program is mandatory for all residents.

Other requirements for admission to a sober house include the ability to provide total personal hygiene care, becoming employed within a specific amount of time, and passing medical and psychological testing. Random drug screening is usually a standard part of the agreement when accepting admission to a sober house.

The length of time spent in a sober house will vary from one individual to the next. There is, however, usually a minimum amount and a maximum amount of time of commitment before being accepted as a resident. This is a crucial step in a recovering alcoholics ability to remain sober. The chances of remaining alcohol-free are greatly enhanced through the support and care received at a sober house.
