Relapse prevention is the long-term goal of addiction treatment centers. A successful completion of a drug or alcohol program is just the beginning of living a lifestyle free from addictive substances. Once the initial controlled phase is over, relapse prevention begins. A relapse can occur anytime to anyone, and that is why it is so important to maintain a system for support and accountability.
Most treatment centers have a system in place for maintaining contact with individuals who complete the specified length of time for confinement and treatment. Relapse prevention includes the services of various types of practitioners, including addiction specialists and counselors. When evaluating a substance abuse treatment facility, always ask about the follow-up care to help prevent relapsing into the old lifestyle.
Some of the areas included in relapse prevention are spiritual counseling, family therapy, nutritional planning, vocational training, and regular support group meetings. All of these and more are often needed in order to help the former addict work through the issues that led them to addiction in the first place. In other words, if family issues precipitated the drinking problem, it is necessary to deal with those issues through family counseling.
Resolving issues of low self-esteem requires counseling that gets to the root of the cause and provides a way to rise above the issue. Entering back into the home and family lifestyle requires a solid support team for the recovering addict if relapse prevention is going to be successful. While it may seem overwhelming, it is possible to live addiction free without relapse.
