Dual diagnosis is a category defining individuals with the need for substance abuse treatment and a diagnosis of at least one DSM-IV Axis I or II mental or other type of developmental disability. The co-existence of a mental disorder and a substance abuse lifestyle complicates the treatment of either or both conditions.
