Dual diagnosis is a category defining individuals with the need for substance abuse treatment and a diagnosis of at least one DSM-IV Axis I or II mental or other type of developmental disability. The co-existence of a mental disorder and a substance abuse lifestyle complicates the treatment of either or both conditions. Each disorder requires primary consideration, and the overall treatment must be coordinated by a team of qualified professionals.

The amount of confinement time will vary according to the dual diagnosis. Some combinations of substance abuse and mental disorders will require more inpatient commitment than other combinations. A complete and accurate diagnosing process must be completed before determining the minimum amount of treatment to consider.

The goal of all dual diagnosis treatment centers is to develop a plan that will address each problem with equal intensity. At the same time, the treatment plans must complement each other for the overall benefit of the resident. The amount of time it takes to develop, implement, and respond to a treatment plan varies since each resident must have a program individualized for their particular needs.

Facilities are available across the nation for treating men and women with dual diagnosis. Some facilities tend to focus more on specific diagnoses while others are all-inclusive. Each facility should be licensed by the state of residence and have a long-standing record of service at the local Better Business Bureau. Before making any commitment, check the history of the facility for violations in business practices. After all, your health or the health of your loved one deserves the best.
