Short for detoxification, detox is the process of ridding the body of any substance on which it has a dependency, such as drugs or alcohol. Drug detoxification should also take place in the care of experienced professionals. In the case of pain killer addiction, numerous options exist for meaningful detoxification. For alcohol, detox has to often be done in a medical facility, under the care of a qualifying physician. Many think of detox as the treatment for alcoholism when it is truly the first phase of a long process to come. Unfortunately, many people repeatedly detox from alcohol or drugs, but do not follow up with any other treatment program. This lack of “follow through” can actually be dangerous if someone continues his or her substance abuse. Studies have shown going through detox more than twice can intensify the withdrawal symptoms.
Effective alcohol and drug detox will also take away the physical cravings as long as there is a hint of alcohol in the persons system. These cravings are often overwhelming, to the point where the person is unable to focus on anything else. Under these conditions, an alcoholic is not in a position to seek treatment. After detox, the mind and body are both cleared so recovery can begin.
